Understanding Travertine
Travertine is a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, which is why it naturally forms with small holes and pits as gas bubbles escape during formation. This gives travertine its distinctive porous, earthy texture and warm color range from ivory to walnut.
Because travertine is calcium-based like marble, it shares similar sensitivities to acidic substances, and its natural porosity means the pits need to be filled with resin or grout to create a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.

- ✓Interior flooring, especially foyers and hallways
- ✓Shower walls and floors
- ✓Outdoor patios and pool decks
- ✓Kitchen backsplashes
- ✓Exterior building cladding
Typical Finishes
Filled & Honed
Pits are filled with color-matched resin and the surface honed smooth — the most common indoor finish.
Filled & Polished
A smoother, glossier version of the honed finish for a more formal look.
Unfilled/Tumbled
Pits are left open for a rustic, textured appearance, often used outdoors.
Common Wear & Mistakes
- •Pits and holes reopening or becoming visible as old fillers wear out
- •Etch marks and dulling from acidic cleaners or spills
- •Grout and pit fillers discoloring over time
- •Hairline cracks in outdoor installations from freeze-thaw cycles
Sealing & Maintenance
- ✓Reseal filled travertine periodically to keep the pits protected and the surface easy to clean
- ✓Refill pits that have opened up to prevent dirt and moisture from collecting in them
- ✓Use pH-neutral cleaners only — never vinegar or citrus-based products
- ✓For outdoor travertine, ensure proper drainage to reduce freeze-thaw damage in Michigan winters
