Understanding Quartzite
Quartzite is a metamorphic rock formed when sandstone is subjected to intense heat and pressure, fusing quartz grains together into an extremely dense, hard stone. It is often confused with both granite (a different natural stone) and engineered quartz (a manufactured product), but true quartzite is prized for combining marble-like veining with granite-level hardness.
Because it is so hard, quartzite resists scratching and etching better than marble or limestone, but it still has natural porosity and needs a quality sealer to resist staining from oils and pigmented liquids.

Typical Finishes
Polished
A glossy finish that shows off quartzite’s marble-like veining.
Honed
A soft matte finish that hides fingerprints and light scratching well.
Leathered
A textured, low-sheen finish that adds subtle depth and hides smudges.
Common Wear & Mistakes
- •Staining from oil or wine when the sealer has worn thin
- •Dulling of the polish over many years of heavy kitchen use
- •Chips at countertop edges from impact
- •Hard water spotting near sinks
Sealing & Maintenance
- ✓Reseal quartzite periodically — while more resistant than marble, it is not stain-proof
- ✓Clean with pH-neutral, stone-safe products
- ✓Use trivets and cutting boards even though the surface is scratch-resistant, to protect the polish
- ✓Wipe up spills promptly, especially oils and pigmented liquids
